Sectors · Elderly care and home care

Nursing homes and home care services with less paperwork and families kept informed.

Nursing homes, day care centres, home care services and the companies that build apps and wearables for older people. We connect the systems a care service already uses and build the software that is still missing. Carers record visits and medication rounds on a phone, readings from devices arrive in one view, and families get the updates the care service shares. We also write down which functions stay care and wellbeing software and where the medical device rules begin.

The resident's day

A resident's day in a nursing home.

01

Morning care

Carers note washing, dressing and breakfast on paper, and the next shift reads the notes at handover.

ImprovementCarers record care on a phone at the bedside, and the next shift sees what changed.

02

Medication round

Doses are signed on paper lists, and a missed dose is noticed late.

ImprovementThe doctor's medication plan is on the carer's phone, each dose is confirmed, and a missed one raises a reminder.

03

Measurements

Blood pressure, weight, pulse oximeter and glucose readings come from devices that each have their own app.

ImprovementReadings from the connected devices arrive in one view per resident.

04

Activities and wellbeing

Activities, meals, sleep and mood are noted only when someone has time.

ImprovementActivities, meals, sleep and mood are recorded in a few taps, and changes show up in the care record.

05

Night

One night nurse covers many residents, and a fall or a resident leaving the room is noticed late.

ImprovementBed and door sensors alert the night nurse on a phone, and every alert and response is logged.

06

Doctor contact

The family doctor hears from the care home when something is already wrong.

ImprovementThe doctor receives the readings or a summary in a form the doctor's system accepts.

07

Family

Relatives phone the nurses to ask how their mother or father is doing.

ImprovementRelatives see the updates the care home shares in an app, with the resident's consent.

The goal

A better day for older people, with less paperwork for the people who care for them.

For residents and families

  • A carer who knows what changed since the last visit
  • Relatives kept up to date without phoning the nurses
  • Screens and apps an older person can use without help

For carers and nurses

  • Documentation and medication rounds on a phone at the bedside
  • Fewer alerts at night that are not urgent
  • All readings of a resident in one view

For the care service

  • One record for each resident or patient
  • Visit plans that adjust when a carer is missing
  • A written answer on which functions fall under the MDR or the FDA rules
Problems and solutions

What we hear, and what we do about it.

Carers write the visit on paper and type it in at the office.

The carer records the visit and the medication round on a phone at the bedside. Without a connection, the app keeps the entry on the phone and sends it when the connection returns. The next carer sees what changed.

Digitalisation and workflow automation
We do not know which functions of our app or wearable make it a medical device.

We read your functions and claims against the MDR and the MDCG 2019-11 guidance (from the EU Medical Device Coordination Group) and write down which are care and wellbeing functions and which are medical. A reminder to take the medication the doctor prescribed stays outside the MDR. Software that calculates or changes a dose, or interprets readings to support a diagnosis, is a medical device and is built under IEC 62304. For the US market, we check the same functions against the FDA guidance on device software functions.

QA, compliance and regulatory
Relatives phone the nurses for news several times a week.

A family app shows what the care service decides to share, such as visits, activities, meals and messages. The resident or a legal representative names the relatives who see it, access is set by role, and the medical record stays closed to them.

Digitalisation and workflow automation
Every monitoring device comes with its own app, and we do not want to depend on one vendor.

Readings come in through a gateway or a phone, over the standard Bluetooth health profiles or the IEEE 11073 profiles for personal health devices. We store them in one format, FHIR Observation, and show them in one view per resident.

Interoperability
Alerts arrive at night, and most of them are not urgent.

The doctor sets the limits for each resident. Alerts on readings against these limits are a monitoring function, so they come from a CE marked device or are built as medical device software under IEC 62304. Each alert type goes to a named person, with an escalation path if nobody responds, and every alert and acknowledgement is logged.

Digitalisation and workflow automation
Older people do not use the apps we give them.

Screens for older users have large type and one task per screen, and we test them with residents and carers before release. Where a function is medical, IEC 62366-1 usability engineering applies.

Digitalisation and workflow automation
We are afraid of a project that never ends.

Each step is a separate contract with a written result. The first one can be a single nursing home, a single route or a single device type.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions.

01

Is a care, wellbeing or mental health app for older people a medical device?

Not while it plans care, records visits, reminds, informs or supports general wellbeing. It becomes one when its intended purpose (what the manufacturer states the software is for) is to diagnose, monitor or treat a condition, for example when it interprets readings for a clinical decision or calculates a dose. We write that boundary into the specification. A wearable outside the MDR is still radio equipment, with the cybersecurity requirements of the Radio Equipment Directive (EN 18031) that apply since August 2025, and falls under the Cyber Resilience Act. For the US market, we check the same functions against the FDA guidance on device software functions.

02

How far can medication support go without the MDR?

Showing the doctor's plan, reminding the resident and recording each dose given are care functions. Calculating, adjusting or recommending a dose is a medical device function, built under IEC 62304 and covered by the MDR. For the US market, we check the same functions against the FDA guidance on device software functions.

03

Can readings from different device vendors come into one view?

Yes, where the device offers a standard Bluetooth health profile or the vendor offers an interface. The readings are stored in one format and shown per resident.

04

Can relatives see updates without seeing the medical record?

Yes. The care service decides what the family app shows, the resident or a legal representative names the relatives, and the medical record stays closed to them. Every access is logged.

05

Can carers document at a resident's home without a connection?

Yes. The app keeps the entry on the phone and sends it when the connection returns.

06

How is personal data handled under the GDPR?

Health data falls under Article 9 of the GDPR. Data stays in your systems, access is set by role and logged, and we prepare the data protection impact assessment for a new system with your data protection officer. Silurus Software works as processor under a data processing agreement. In the US, the same work runs under HIPAA and a business associate agreement.

07

What does a first project cost, and how fast can it start?

The first call is free. Each step after it is quoted individually and agreed in writing. A project can start within two to three weeks of signature.
