Context

Algorithms that stayed in the research lab.

Research institutions and university hospitals develop their own contouring algorithms for radiotherapy planning.

Contouring, outlining the tumour and the organs at risk on each image slice, is one of the most time consuming steps before a treatment plan can be calculated.

An algorithm that runs on a researcher's workstation does not reach a clinical team by itself. It needs computing capacity, a secure path to the hospital's image data and somebody who operates and scales it.

Radiotherapy planning

Contouring before every treatment plan.

Challenge

One platform for many algorithms and many hospitals.

The manufacturer wanted a central platform where third party algorithms could be onboarded and run on demand, without each hospital buying and operating its own hardware.

No local hardware

Hospitals should run advanced algorithms without buying and operating their own computing infrastructure.

Hospital image data

Patient images move between hospital PACS environments and the execution pipelines over DICOM.

Data security

Patient image data protected in transit and at rest, across institutions and sites.

Solution

A cloud native microservice platform.

Algorithms from many partners, one platform, images from many hospitals.

Silurus Software designed, built and delivered the platform with a team of three developers and a delivery manager, and has worked on the client's radiotherapy software over several years.

Each algorithm runs as an isolated service that scales with demand. The platform manages the data flow between hospital PACS environments and the execution pipelines over DICOM.

Scope

What the platform does.

01

Algorithm hosting

Contouring algorithms executed and scaled as isolated services in the cloud.

02

Onboarding

A defined path for research partners to bring their own algorithms onto the platform.

03

DICOM integration

Data flow between hospital PACS environments and the execution pipelines.

04

Data security

Patient image data protected in transit and at rest.

05

On demand access

Radiotherapy departments use the algorithms when they need them.

06

Delivery

Design, build and delivery by a dedicated team with a delivery manager.

Results

Contouring on demand, without local infrastructure.
